Pounding them back in is a temporary fix at best.

First of all the first thing you need to do is to remove all the outdated and defective gutter ferrules or spikes. They do the job all right but eventually the spikes work themselves loose. One main tip to replace the spikes is to simply remove it accordingly one by one and not in a hurry.
