My Stoma Is Sticking Out

Most stomas stick out a little over the skin but some are flat.

Came home with the dreadful hollister bags got rid of them real quick then changed to a one piece coloplast flat base. Does anyone know of any products that give that extra bit of security ie what is best to help it stick. Always has since i got it in 11 12. Then last thursday i noticed my stoma seemed to be sticking out a bit more than usual. Ileostomy output is more acidic and corrosive as the enzymes are not being broken down by the colon. Seemed ok for awhile but had to add eakin seals that became a nightmare getting all of the glue off when. A stoma is very delicate.

So it is important to take special care of the stoma to avoid. My stoma sticks out about an inch. The surgeon certainly does have some control over it but perhaps not totally. Since i started a new med gattex in the attempt to get less output and some nutrition from what i eat on tpn for rest of life the width of stoma increased a tad where the wafer has to be adjusted more to fit.

The feces that come out of the stoma can be very irritating to the skin. It was about time to change the ostomy bag anyway so i went into the bathroom removed the bag and gasp. I look after the skin carefully and it s in reasonable condition. Because my stoma is so flat and the output is so close to the skin it doesn t take much for the bag not to stick.

Your stoma may bleed a little when you clean it. Making sure your ostomy pouch adheres properly will go a long way towards preventing leaks. When i went to get measured for my stoma i asked the stoma nurse if the surgeon knew the importance of creating a stoma which sticks out far enough she said yes.
